Warts are non-cancerous lumps on the surface of your skin caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) family. Warts are generally considered harmless, but they can be contagious and painful – as well as unsightly.

However, it should be noted that genital warts, those that appear in or around your genitals, can lead to cervical cancer in women. If you believe you have genital warts, you should consult with Dr. Sana immediately.

The other main types of warts are Plantar warts and Periungual warts. The former are warts that appear on the heels, soles or other weight-bearing areas of your feet. These warts grow inside your skin, can cause pain and discomfort and may make walking difficult. However, they are not considered malignant or dangerous. Periungual warts, on the other hand, grow under and around toenails. They can affect nail growth and are painful.

Warts generally don’t respond well to home treatment and attempts to self-treat may worsen your condition.

Instead, you can consult with Dr. Sana who will examine your warts and skin. Based on your condition, she will choose from a number of treatment options and provide a treatment plan to remove your warts.

Below are some of the wart removal procedures offered by Dr. Sana.

Laser Removal

In laser removal, an intense beam of laser is used to burn and destroy the wart tissue. This is a highly effective method of removal, especially when the wart is very large and has not responded to medication or other treatments.
Laser removal may require a longer recovery time than other treatments depending on the area and size of the wart.

Excision Removal

Excision removal involves removing warts with a surgical knife (scalpel). This is usually used to remove genital warts and is a very effective treatment option. You may only require a single treatment to remove all warts.

It takes around 2 or more weeks for the affected area to be completely healed, but you can return to your daily activities as early as 2 days.

Cryotherapy

Cryotherapy involves the use of liquid nitrogen. Dr. Sana will freeze off the wart, causing the cell to die. In a few weeks, the wart will fall off.

Cryotherapy can be one of the more painful treatment options. There may also be blistering and discolored skin in the affected area, but this usually subsides in a short time.

What causes warts?

Warts are a result of contracting HPV, usually through skin-to-skin contact, such as shaking hands or hugging. You may also get them through objects such as towels used by a person with warts. Scratching your warts can cause them to spread to other parts of your body.

When should I seek professional help?

If you experience any of the following, you should contact a professional dermatologist like Dr. Sana immediately:
• bleeding, scabbing or pus around the warts
• pain due to the warts
• change in color of the warts
• you have warts and other medical conditions such as diabetes or an immunodeficiency disorder (eg AIDS/HIV)

Do warts heal on their own?

In children, warts usually go away on their own. However, adults with weak immune systems are encouraged to seek professional help.

Is treatment painful?

This depends on the treatment method, area of infection and the size of warts. Laser removal is usually pain-free or a bit uncomfortable at worst. Excision and cryotherapy will require anesthesia to allay the pain.

How can I prevent warts?

To prevent warts:
• Regularly wash your hands if you have been in contact with someone who has warts.
• Wear footwear when in locker rooms, pool areas and public showers.
• Don’t pick at or scratch your warts.
• Cover your warts with a bandage.
