Hidradenitis suppurativa is an inflammatory skin disorder that causes small, painful bumps to form under the skin. The bumps form in the hair follicles near sweat glands, which may rupture and leak fluids. In some cases, these get infected leading to pus-filled pockets under your skin to form, which can cause scarring when they break open. Hidradenitis Suppurativa is not contagious.

The condition usually affects areas where the skin rubs together, such as:
• armpits
• buttocks
• groin
• breasts
• anus
• inner thighs.

If you experience red pimple-like bumps, cysts, draining nodules, or boils in the aforementioned areas, it may be cause for concern.

If your symptoms are left untreated, your condition may worsen. You may develop tunnels, which are tracts that connect the lumps under your skin. They can leak pus and may have an odor. The number of bumps will also increase in the affected area and there may be scarring.

If you experience constant flare-ups, are in pain and your condition does not improve in a few weeks, you should consult with a professional dermatalogist like Dr. Sana immediately to avoid any further complications.

There is no cure for Hidradenitis Suppurativa but it is possible to reduce or prevent future breakouts and remove scarring.

When you consult with Dr. Sana, she will assess your situation, medical history, skin type and develop a treatment plan that is tailored to your situation. In most cases, patients see the best results with a combination of medications and a surgical procedure.

Medications usually include antibiotics, pain medications, retinoids and/or systemic drugs.

Some surgical options include:
• Using carbon dioxide laser therapy to remove lesions
• Excision which involves cutting out the Hidradenitis Suppurativa and part of the skin
• Unroofing which involves removing tissues to expose tunnels under the skin

Ultimately, the best course of treatment will vary for each patient as it depends on the severity of symptoms and other biological and genetic factors. The quicker you consult with Dr. Sana, the better your chances of improving your condition and preventing any further problems.

How is Hidradenitis Suppurativa diagnosed?

Dr. Sana will examine your breakouts to see if they are leaking fluid. The fluid will be swabbed onto a slide to check for infections. This, in combination with your symptoms and medical history, will determine whether you have Hidradenitis Suppurativa or not.
