back psoriasis treatment

Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease that causes the rapid build-up of skin cells, resulting in scaling on the skin’s surface.

Usually, dead skin cells fall off and allow for fresh ones to resurface. With psoriasis, the new cells are developed at a rate faster than normal, not allowing time for the dead skin cells to shed away.

The skin cells build up, causing red, scaly patches to form on the surface on the skin. Some of these patches can bleed. Sore, inflamed and itchy areas of the skin are also symptoms of psoriasis. Your skin may also be dry and cracked and in some cases, the nails are affected as well.

The most common types of psoriasis are as follows-
• Plaque: This type causes red, inflamed patches that cover areas of the skin. The patches are covered with silvery scales and usually affect the elbows, knees, scalp, facial, nail, lower back, and genitals. This is the most common form of psoriasis.
• Guttate: This type is mostly found in children and causes pink or red spots around the arms, legs, facial, nail and scalp. These spots aren’t covered by scales and aren’t as thick as plaques.
• Inverse: This form causes smooth patches of red, inflamed skin in or around the armpits or breasts, in the groin, or around skinfolds in the genitals.
• Pustular: With pustular psoriasis, white, pus-filled bumps appear around areas of red, swollen skin.
• Erythrodermic: This form is rare but severe. The entire body is covered with a large, red itching rash. This is usually accompanied by a fever or some illness. This condition is life-threatening and should be immediately checked by a doctor.

While there is no known cure for psoriasis, it is possible to reduce the symptoms through topical and systemic treatments. Under Dr. Sana’s care and supervision, most patients report relief from their flare-ups.

After you consult with her, Dr. Sana will provide a personalized psoriasis treatment plan tailored to suit your situation. Because there are several hereditary, lifestyle and genetic factors that can cause psoriasis, treatment will differ for each patient.

For most patients, Dr. Sana prescribes steroid creams, calcipotriene ointment, topical retinoids, and/or salicylic acid ointments. She may also administer injectable medications to control the body’s overactive immune response. Light therapy is also another treatment option with encouraging results.

The treatment is usually coupled with a change in lifestyle because psoriasis is linked to triggers such as stress, smoking, infections, and certain medications.

What causes psoriasis?

While the cause of psoriasis is not fully understood, the disease has been linked to a person’s genetics and immune system. In addition, certain triggers have also been linked to psoriasis, which includes smoking, alcohol consumption, stress, infections, certain medications, and Vitamin D deficiency.

How is psoriasis diagnosed?

Dr. Sana can usually diagnose psoriasis with a simple physical examination as the symptoms of this disease are fairly evident. Information such as if family members have existing skin conditions also make it easy to distinguish. In some cases, a skin biopsy will need to be carried out. This means a sample of your skin will be taken for further examination.

Can psoriasis be cured?

Currently, there is no known cure for psoriasis but with the right treatment plan and proper care, it can go into remission leading to clear skin and a return to regular life.

How can I prevent psoriasis?

Since psoriasis is a hereditary disease, there is no exhaustive list of preventative measures available at this time. However, consulting with Dr. Sana may reveal which triggers cause or worsen your condition. Avoiding them will be the best course of action.
