What is Botox?

Botox is a ‘3S’ (simple, safe and satisfactory) procedure that has become a popular rejuvenation method in the world of cosmetic dermatology.

In simple terms, Botox is a purified form of the botulinum toxin A. Since it is purified, there is no risk of botulism. Botox, therefore, acts as a muscle-relaxing toxin that works by blocking the nerves that contract the muscles. This helps to smooth out wrinkles and give a fresh, youthful appearance.

Before discussing the injectable treatments you can opt for, it is imperative to understand the two types of wrinkles patients commonly experience.

The first type is referred to as ‘dynamic wrinkles’, which are a direct result of repetitive muscle movements such as laughing, smiling, frowning, squinting and so on. This eventually leads to the formation of wrinkles around the lips, brow or under the eyes. To combat this, Botox is the preferred treatment option.

‘Static wrinkles’ are the other form of wrinkles most commonly found. They form due to a loss of elasticity and collagen in your skin. It may also be caused by exposure to ultra-violet (UV) light or smoking. As your skin becomes drier, more fragile and loses its support structure, there is a loss in volume leading to wrinkles forming around your nose and mouth. To treat these static wrinkles, injectable fillers such as dermal fillers are usually administered.

What is 'filler'?

Like Botox, fillers are also a minimally invasive, non-surgical injectable treatment.

Fillers, like Dermal fillers, are injectable substances designed to smooth static wrinkles by adding volume and fullness to areas of the face that lack it. The main substance in these fillers is Hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring molecule in our bodies that keeps elastin and collagen healthy. With time, the amount of collagen and Hyaluronic acid in one’s face decreases, resulting in decreased facial volume and wrinkling.

By using fillers, dermatologists can volumize the regions of the face that have lost collagen or fat. This will smooth out lines and wrinkles to give you a fresher appearance and restore your facial vigor.
